The Season of Lent
Lent is the forty day season (excluding Sundays) that starts with Ash Wednesday and ends with Holy Week (Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter). The Lenten Season of 2020 lasts from February 26th to April 9th. The word “Lent” means spring. But it’s more like winter — the last blast of cold before the warm green is here to stay. Fasting before feasting. Gearing down before going up. Churches and individuals can recognize the Lenten Season in a variety of ways. At Redemption Peoria, we believe that there is great value in observing and engaging in the Season of Lent. There is not only a deep focus on repentance but more importantly on the life of our Lord, Jesus Christ. We are forced to slow down and reorient our lives. This is a time to repent well, lament well, and look to the horizon we know as believers is coming. This is an outward act meant to direct inner devotion — to prepare you for Easter and to give context to your celebration. Our hope and prayer is that this season, which has been observed by thousands of our brothers and sisters throughout church history, makes our celebration that much sweeter on that glorious Easter morn.
